The San Francisco Social

The 2010 San Francisco Social benefits the KIPP Schools & The Pegasus Fund. KIPP provides a proven path to and through college, regardless of previous academic record – 80% of KIPP alumni nationwide have matriculated to college, compared to the national average of 40% for low-income students.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, five KIPP middle schools and two KIPP high schools are proving that demography does not define destiny. More than 2,000 students are being prepared for success in college and the competitive world beyond. These tuition-free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory schools are located in the under-served neighborhoods of Bayview Hunters Point and the Western Addition in San Francisco, East San Jose, San Lorenzo, and West Oakland.

Marin natives behind holiday benefit party for philanthropic-minded 20-somethings

Marin Independent Journal Anderson Pugash and Kelly Cregg know how lucky they are to have grown up wealthy in Marin County, with all the opportunities and privileges that brings. And now they feel it's time for them to give back. Both are college grads in their 20s who come from prominent Marin families that instilled in them the value of art and music and culture. Pugash, who's 23 and grew up in Tiburon, is the founder of the San Francisco Social, an annual holiday season benefit party for philanthropic-minded young people from Marin, San Francisco and the Peninsula. Set for Dec. 18 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, it's a benefit for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, namely the de Young and the Legion of Honor. Pugash expects to raise $16,000 to $17,000 for them. "We are delighted that these young art enthusiasts and supporters have chosen to celebrate the season with an event to benefit the Fine Arts Museums," said museums director John Buchanan. Cregg is the 25-year-old daughter of rock star Huey Lewis and his wife, Sidney. She has been on the organizing committee for the social since its inception for years ago. "I grew up with a clear sense of how important the arts are and how enriching they are in your life," she said. The social started as a fundraiser for the Sonoma Jazz Plus Festival, founded by Pugash's late father, James. It raised more than $38,000 for the festival, a benefit for music in the schools.

Tipsy Pig serves up affordable goodness

SAN FRANCISCO — Restaurateur Sam Josi, chef and co-owner of the new gastropub The Tipsy Pig, really got it right. A Marin County boy, he has recreated the American-dream menu for San Francisco tastes. The Pig’s setting is pure Marina, a doublewide storefront with old wooden floors, a high ceiling and a back patio. The busy bar runs down one side with a single flat screen TV and bartenders that must have been hired for their adorability quotient. A painfully noisy dining room runs up the other side. The place to sit, if you’re there to eat, is the quiet library room at the back. I love the small tables next to bookshelves of used hardcovers, no doubt bought by the pound, but still a treasure trove. I got so wrapped up in interior secretary Harold L. Ickes’ diary of the first thousand days of the Roosevelt administration, 1933 -1936, that I almost let the onion fritters ($7) get away. Big mistake. Eat one of these puffy, crisp-tender fritters, spiky with onions and sprinkled with miniscule onion sprouts, and you’ll munch until the whole pile disappears. So many of the starters and small plates make me happy — and most of them are hardly small. The Wedge ($9), a model of its kind, is a long heart of romaine, split lengthwise and draped in thin, juicy buttermilk blue cheese dressing, topped with fried onion strings and bits of bacon. San Francisco Night Benefits the City's Fine Art Museums

The city's young, affluent and art-minded attended the third annual San Francisco Night benefitting the de Young and Legion of Honor. This year's fundraiser, hosted by Anderson Pugash, was held at Taverna Aventine, the new Barbary Coast-styled restaurant from Vintage415 and Gian-Paolo Veronese.

Anderson Pugash

Anderson began his career in real estate, nightlife and events at an early age. In 2005, aged 19, he purchased, renovated and leased a fixer-upper in Manayunk, Pennsylvania. The following year he organized his first fundraiser, raising money for the Sonoma Jazz+ Festival, a four day non-profit music festival which has helped maintain the Sonoma Valley High School Music program in the face of budget cuts. During that same year, he became a limited partner in the Ambassador, a San Francisco night-life staple.

Spurred on by his passion for these projects, he expanded- renovating a William Turnbull home in Healdsburg, California, investing in other bars and restaurants, and creating a special events firm that hosts fundraisers and parties. Anderson Pugash received his B.S. from the Wharton School of Business in 2008 and works in acquisitions for a real estate developer and investor. He is also a commissioner on the Golden Gate Park Concourse Authority and a supporter of the Sonoma Jazz+ Festival, the San Francisco Museums of Fine Art, and KIPP Bay Area Schools.
